The City of Grande Prairie began replacing two playgrounds on Tuesday, July 9.

Work began on the playground at Monkman Park in O’Brien Lake, with the playground located at 74 Avenue and 107 Street in the Mission Heights subdivision scheduled to start soon.

To complete the replacements and revitalize the playgrounds, the City enlisted the creative assistance of local children to select the new colour palettes for the playgrounds. Students from two Stepping Stone daycares selected the colorful Macaw palette for the Mission Height’s playground site while children from École Louis Riel chose the vibrant Seabreeze palette for Monkman Park.

The decision to replace these playgrounds was based on a comprehensive analysis. Factors considered included a thorough assessment of playground safety against current standards, the age and condition of the playgrounds, ongoing maintenance costs, and their proximity to other playgrounds. The analysis aimed to prioritize areas where improvements would have the greatest impact on community safety and enjoyment.

The projects are anticipated to be complete by September 30.

Project details:

The playground replacements include:

·       Removal of existing playground equipment, surfacing, and borders.

·       New installations featuring updated playground equipment and new wood border.

·       Engineered Wood Fiber surfacing.

To ensure safety, playgrounds will be fenced off prior to the commencement of work, with fences remaining until the final inspection is completed and approved.
