Grande Prairie Enforcement Services is continuing its focus on reducing complaints about noisy vehicles in the community. Throughout the month of June, five traffic operations were completed with a focus on vehicle noise violations and other vehicle equipment-related infractions.

During those education and enforcement checks, 100 tickets for various violations were written and two vehicles were towed. In June, 44 noise-related tickets were issued, including 27 during traffic operations.

These initiatives stemmed from complaints about vehicle noise in the City of Grande Prairie this spring and followed training for Peace Officers specific to modified exhausts and motor vehicle noise-related issues.

“We will continue to target noisy vehicles through static enforcement operations throughout the summer,” says Peace Officer Sergeant Ryan Hoffman. “Loud and excessive noise from vehicles, including vehicles without mufflers or with illegal vehicle modifications, are being addressed as the community is concerned about the excessive noise that these vehicles produce.”

Drivers with questions about noise from their vehicles, after-market vehicle modifications, and Alberta’s Vehicle Equipment Regulation are invited to visit the Enforcement Services office at 12102 100 Street in Grande Prairie between the hours of 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. on July 20, 2024. This is an amnesty event, during which no violation tickets will be issued.

City of Grande Prairie Bylaw C-1103C prohibits creating or causing the emission of any loud and unnecessary noise from a motor vehicle, including the use of engine retarder brakes and signalling devices that make more noise than is reasonably necessary. The provincial Vehicle Equipment Regulation also includes restrictions on after market vehicle equipment.

Vehicles making excessive and unnecessary noise at any time of the day can lead to drivers receiving fines ranging from $162 to a mandatory court appearance. To make a complaint about a noisy vehicle, contact Enforcement Services at 780-830-5790 or es_contact@cityofgp.com.
