The U14 Lions Oilers football team has successfully concluded their summer training sessions and is now focused on the upcoming season. Head Coach Christian Pfeifer, in his first year leading the team, shared updates on registration deadlines and preparations for the new season.
Reflecting on the summer workouts, Pfeifer said, “This past Thursday was our last summer workout and they've been fairly good. The kids that we have had out there, they seem like they're having a lot of fun. It's a really good opportunity to learn the basic skills needed to play football.”
The deadline for player registration is quickly approaching. “July 31st is our registration cutoff date,” Pfeifer noted. “We have to submit a final roster number to the league before August 1st. The easiest way to register is online at estevanfootball.com.”
As August approaches, parents and players need to be aware of important upcoming dates. Equipment handout will be on either August 7th or 8th, with the exact date yet to be confirmed. “Our next big date is August 12th. That's when the Oilers are going to be starting our preseason camps. We're running that on the 12th, the 13th, and the 15th,” Pfeifer explained. “The week of the 19th is when we start our regular practices, and then usually the first weekend of September is going to be our first game.”
In addition to player recruitment, the team is also looking for new coaches. Pfeifer, who began coaching immediately after finishing his playing career 10 years ago, encourages others to consider the role. “After I was done playing, I immediately got into coaching. It was the month after I graduated, I got asked to come do coaching and I said, what the heck, let's give it a try,” he recalled. “I fell in love with it immediately and then, you know, built all these relationships with kids throughout the years. It's been a great experience and I’m planning on continuing it for as long as I can.”
