A public hearing organized by the Winnipeg Metropolitan Region will not be happening in Niverville today.

The hearing was intended to shed light on proposed legislation, particularly Bill 37, which could reshape regional governance. The Winnipeg Metropolitan Region Plan20-50 public hearing was scheduled for Thursday afternoon at the Niverville Heritage Centre.

By Thursday at 3 p.m., the Niverville Heritage Centre was packed to capacity, with individuals also waiting outside. It was then, that an announcement was made to those present, informing the public that the hearing would be rescheduled.

A spokesperson informed the crowd of the importance that everyone be heard and noted that a larger facility will be found to accommodate this. And, because of the required 40-day notice, this rescheduled public hearing will not be happening until September at the earliest.

RCMP officers were present to assist in making sure the building was vacated peacefully.

"Unfortunately the event holders didn't have a large enough venue," says officer Randy Belmore. "So instead of just having heard part of the group, they decided to cancel."

Belmore says everyone wants to be heard.

"And they are leaving, and they are very polite," he says. "So I've got no complaints."
