A six-year-old boy was sent to hospital with undetermined injuries after he was hit by a pickup truck in Winkler on Monday afternoon.

According to the Winkler Police Service, an officer on patrol shortly after 1 p.m. witnessed the collision on Pembina Avenue at Main Street.

Police say a red Chevrolet Silverado turned east onto Pembina Avenue from southbound Main Street and collided with the small child who was crossing the intersection on a bicycle. According to police, the driver of the truck stopped briefly in the roadway before accelerating, heading eastbound in what police say was an obvious attempt to leave the scene.

The officer was able to stop the suspect from fleeing before moving to provide first aid to the victim. At the same time, an off-duty local doctor approached the scene and began providing medical care to the boy.

The driver of the truck, a 50-year-old man from Plum Coulee, was arrested and is facing charges of Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle Causing Bodily Harm, Failure to Stop After an Accident Causing Bodily Harm, and Driving without a Driver’s Licence. 

Pembina Avenue between 4th Street and Main Street was closed for a few hours Monday afternoon, but has since re-opened. 

A Winkler Police Service Collision Reconstructionist attended the scene, and the investigation is on-going.
