The 2024 Tools for School campaign has officially kicked off!
Demands for school supplies in the Peace Country continue to grow, and the costs constantly increase.
Executive Director of United Way Alberta Northwest Ken Loudon says, “Not everyone can afford to go out and buy everything they need. In fact, in our region alone, one in five children are living in poverty.”
Loudon says for so many families and single moms it’s an extreme burden and sometimes overwhelming trying to get school supplies for their kids.
The Tools for School program work with several volunteers and organizations to put together backpacks full of essential school supplies for kids in need.
“Our need this year has gone up substantially. Last year we packed 1238 backpacks and went out to 34 communities and 107 schools throughout our region. This year the need has increased and we're about to pack 1436 backpacks that will be distributed in 37 communities and 104 schools in our region.”
