BHP invites residents of LeRoy and area to an information session to learn more about 3D seismic survey efforts in potash exploration north of the Jansen Mine site in the RM of LeRoy. Work will begin this fall and wrap up by 2025.

The meeting is slated for Thursday, August 15 from 4:00 – 7:00 pm at the LeRoy School Gym. The information presentation will be held at 5:30.

An information release from BHP notes that the survey, undertaken with a contractor, will encompass up to 320 square kilometres of land to help locate potash deposits.

“3D seismic surveys investigate the underground structure of the earth,” the release states. “This involves drilling small holes up to 10 metres deep and using an energy source, such as vibrations or small explosives, to send sound waves into the ground. Seismic receivers measure the vibrations returned from the earth’s layers. Different rocks produce distinct seismic responses, which help us identify the present of potash and other relevant geology.”

Area impact is expected to be minimal but may occasionally result in low levels of noise, vibration and increased vehicle and equipment presence. Work cleanup will be undertaken to protect waterways and sensitive environmental areas.

The seismic investigation is a continuation of work undertaken from 2007 to 2014 in areas near to the mine site.
