Starting August 21, the City of Grande Prairie begins a comprehensive road rehabilitation project on 84 Avenue and 116 Street. This project aims to address current and future traffic demands while enhancing the quality of the road infrastructure. The work will proceed in three stages, with an expected completion date in the first week of October.

Project Overview:

  • Stage One: 84 Avenue (113 Street to 116 Street): Full-depth reclamation (FDR) work begins August 21 on the eastbound lanes of 84 Avenue. The project includes pulverizing existing pavement, compacting and repaving and new roadway markings.
  • Stage Two: Intersection of 84 Avenue and 116 Street: As the FDR portion of the project progresses, the intersection will experience disruptions. Traffic management measures will be in place to ensure local traffic access is maintained when possible. Detours will be implemented.
  • Stage Three: 116 Street (68 Avenue to 84 Avenue): Following the completion of work on 84 Avenue, FDR and mill and overlay work begins on 116 Street.

Traffic Impacts:

  • Stage One: 84 Avenue (113 Street to 116 Street):
    • Eastbound lanes on 84 Avenue will be redirected to the westbound lanes, allowing two-way traffic. Short-term road closures may occur, and a reduced speed limit of 30 km/h will be enforced.

·         Stage Two: Intersection of 84 Avenue and 116 Street

    • To facilitate work at the intersection, there will be no through traffic at the intersection. The southbound traffic on 116 Street going east on 84 Avenue will be redirected to the northbound lanes at 89 Avenue, allowing for two-way traffic. Local traffic to the Kensington area will be maintained. Non-local traffic will follow detour at 89 Avenue.
    • Trucks and non-local traffic in Northbound lanes will be detoured at 68 Avenue with a secondary detour option at 77 Avenue for local traffic.
  • Stage Three: 116 Street:
    • Once FDR, milling and overlay work begins, similar traffic management measures will be implemented. Details on detours and access will be shared closer to the start date of this stage.

No transit impacts are expected during this project, but delays are expected.

Pedestrian access on the south side of 84 Avenue remains open throughout the construction period.

Residents are encouraged to plan ahead, follow detour signage, and allow extra travel time. The city appreciates your patience as we work to improve our infrastructure for a safer, more efficient roadway system.
