He was raised on the family farm northwest of Simmie. Jim attended school at Thring School.

As a young man Dad worked at Kisbey, SK cutting down trees to make fence posts and worked on a farm in the Webb area. He would send the money he made home to help with his brother’s education. He then worked as a Mechanic with Central Sales in Gull Lake from 1950-57 and worked in the oilfield in Northern Alberta through the harsh cold winters. While working as a Mechanic he was able to attend school in Saskatoon to get his Journeyman papers. Dad was offered a position with the Highway Traffic Board in Swift Current in 1957. He worked at the weigh scales and then moved to the position of Driver Examiner until he retired in 1990. He traveled to many small towns in southwest Saskatchewan to do Drivers testing and safe driving meetings.

Dad was a member of the First United Church in Swift Current. He was a Boy Scout leader at the church. Dad and Mom attended Couples Club and their children have fond memories of this time. Dad also spent many years serving on the building committee. Dad coached hockey when his son was playing and would go and cheer his two daughters on when they played hockey.

He was very active with the Saskatchewan Government Employees Union (SGEU) and served as Vice President and President. After retirement he belonged to the Saskatchewan Retirees Association.

Dad loved camping, we spent many years camping at Sask. Landing and Cypress Hills Park as well as trips to BC with the family. We have lasting memories of our camping trips. Dad and Mom spent from May to September at the Sask. Landing after retirement and the family would join them as much as possible. Dad loved to fish and especially loved to take his grandchildren out in the boat with him. Dad enjoyed watching hockey, football and any sport his grandchildren and great grandchildren played. He and Mom were long term Bronco Season Ticket Holders. He also played baseball as a young man. Dad and Mom took five trips to Cuba with friends which they really enjoyed and talked about for years.
