Much of Southern Manitoba is under a heat warning for the next two days. Environment Canada issued the warning Friday evening, and expects it to be in place through Sunday.

Here’s what you need to know about the upcoming heatwave:

What to Expect

  • High Temperatures and Humidity: This weekend, southern Manitoba will experience very hot and humid conditions. Daytime temperatures are expected to reach the low 30s Celsius, with high humidity making it feel even hotter.
  • Humidex Values: On Saturday and Sunday humidex values (which combine temperature and humidity to show how hot it feels) will reach the upper 30s or low 40 to mid 40s.
  • Nighttime Temperatures: Even at night, it will remain warm, with temperatures staying in the low 20s.

Safety Tips

To stay safe during this heatwave:

  1. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water regularly, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Thirst isn’t always a good indicator of dehydration.
  2. Avoid Outdoor Activities: Try to schedule outdoor activities for the cooler parts of the day.
  3. Find Cool Spots: If you’re outside, find shade or go to air-conditioned places like public buildings.
  4. Limit Sun Exposure: Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing and a wide-brimmed hat. Use an umbrella for extra shade.
  5. Never Leave People or Pets in Cars: It’s dangerous and can quickly lead to heat-related illnesses.
  6. Monitor Health Conditions: Consult a health professional about how your medications or conditions might affect your risk in the heat.

Recognize Heat Illness

Be aware of the signs of heat illness, such as:

  • Feeling unwell
  • Fatigue
  • Thirst
  • Headaches

If you experience these symptoms, move to a cooler place immediately, such as an air-conditioned space or shaded area.
