The Strathmore Spartans held their first and only preseason game of the season over the weekend.
The football match was against the Catholic Central Cougars, based out of Lethbridge. The game was played at the Strathmore High School football field on Saturday afternoon.
Despite the heavy wind, the stands were packed with fans, friends, and family, with some residents even setting up lawn chairs to watch the game.
"I'd like to thank all the people who showed up to the game to support us," said head coach Danny Warrack. "I wish we could have put on a little bit better of a show."
It was a devastating shutout for the Spartans, with the team losing the game by a score of 35-0.
"It's a young, inexperienced team we've got here. I thought the competition level was pretty good, but we've got a lot of work to do. Practices are going to be harder going forward," added Warrack. "Good news is we've got a lot of players in Grades 10 and 11, so I think the future is bright, but we've got to teach these guys what it takes to be high school football players."
"It was a good experience for all of them, they kind of got their feet wet with it."
The Spartans now head into the regular season, with their first game set for Friday (Aug. 30) in Cardston against the Cardston Cougars. Their next home game will be on September 6 against the Chestermere Chiefs.
