Several MPs make pitches to colleagues to become next Speaker of the House of Commons
Among the tour groups converging on Parliament Hill under umbrellas this week, new and newly re-elected members of Parliament are getting acquainted with their offices and colleagues ahead of the opening of the House of Commons this week.
The first order of business for MPs is the selection of a new House Speaker on Monday morning, and at least six returning members are asking their colleagues to support their bid to take the chair.
Meet Gwen Smith, the valedictorian at Strathmore High School
Strathmore High School’s Class of 2025 is celebrating graduation on Saturday, May 24.
Gwen Smith has been selected as valedictorian — a goal she has worked toward since Grade 7.
"I've been putting in a lot of work and a lot of effort into my academics," said Smith.
"I used to live in Hong Kong, and I was not the best at school because it's very academically oriented there, but then when I came to Canada, I was at the top of the class, so I just kind of wanted to stay there."

Top officials at the Canada Revenue Agency say mounting job cuts will impact how the agency is able to deliver services.
Commissioner Bob Hamilton and deputy commissioner Jean-François Fortin said in a message to staff Thursday that up to 280 employees will lose their jobs at the agency.
The agency has been examining its operating budget for more than two years to meet a demand from the government to find savings.

U.S. President Donald Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill” could contain some beautiful news for Canada’s canola growers.
The U.S. House of Representatives’ ways and means committee has released its draft proposals for the U.S. budget reconciliation bill.
The proposals include provisions to amend the controversial 45Z clean fuel production tax credit so that canola oil-based biodiesel and renewable diesel would be eligible for the credit.
Producer groups come together to help fund ag research facilities at U of S
Construction is underway at the University of Saskatchewan that will see critical facility improvements within the College of Agriculture and Bioresources.
Two new facilities are being built - the Harrington Plant Growth Facility and the Soil Science Field Facility - while a portion of the Crop Science Field Lab is being renovated to provide additional workspace for the Crop Development Centre.
Strathmore showing off equipment in weekend event
The Town of Strathmore have an event going on for residents on Saturday, May 24.
Equipment in the Park runs between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at Kinsmen Park and features the heavy equipment and trucks that the town has in its fleet.
"The public will see the town’s public works, parks and municipal enforcement equipment and personnel," said staff with the town. "They will get a chance to sit in the equipment, test the horns, and talk to the operators."
STARS and BluPlanet will also be at the event, along with colouring contests, prizes, and food trucks.
Strathmore receiving $1.09 million to help battle wildfires
The Town of Strathmore will be receiving $1.09 million to help battle wildfires across the province.
On Friday, May 23, Minister of Public Safety and Emergency Services Mike Ellis met with Strathmore Mayor Pat Fule and Chestermere-Strathmore MLA Chantelle de Jonge at the Strathmore Fire Department to make the announcement.
Wheatland EMS provides statistics to Strathmore town council
The Wheatland and Adjacent Districts Emergency Medical Services Association (WADEMSA) provided a report to Strathmore town council on Wednesday, May 5.
The report went over statistics, upcoming events, and the organization's needs.
There were around 170 calls in April 2025, down from 176 the previous year.
For the year to date, there have been 1456 calls, a slight increase to the 1322 calls in 2024.
WADEMSA also showcased the teddy bears for kids' program, which gives small children a Nutrien and WADEMSA-branded teddy bear at call scenes.
Strathmore school lockdown tied to "Senior Assassin" game
The lockdown at Strathmore High School on Friday, May 23, was caused by a recent viral game.
Just before noon, police responded to reports of a suspect with a gun at the school. Due to the seriousness of the report, police initiated a lockdown at the school and surrounding buildings.
"RCMP arrived at the scene and quickly located the suspect, who was taken into custody without incident," wrote police.
