As the 2024-2025 school year begins, school zones will be back in effect throughout Strathmore.

Beginning on Wednesday (Aug. 28), classes have resumed at Christ the Redeemer Catholic Schools, which includes Sacred Heart Academy and Holy Cross Collegiate. As for Golden Hills School Division, the first day of school is on Sept. 3, almost a week later.

School zones can be distinguished by a yellow pentagon that displays two people walking and is in effect on school days during the following hours unless posted underneath the sign:

  • 8:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.
  • 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
  • 3:00 p.m. to 4:30 p.m.

In school zones, the speed limit is dropped to 30 km/h. Those who are caught speeding through school zones may face fines along with the loss of demerits. Speeding fines also double if it's through a school zone.

Playground zones, on the other hand, are effective all year long from 8:30 a.m. until one hour after sunset. The speed limit in these zones is also reduced to 30 km/h. Playground zones can be distinguished by an orange diamond that depicts a person running after a ball.

Residents are encouraged to exercise caution as school zones come into effect.
