Manitobans will no longer be able to get a rebate on security systems as their neighbours quickly took advantage of the government program.
The province introduced a rebate program in June allowing homeowners and small businesses to recoup part of the costs of installing security systems. It was all in an effort to help combat crime in the province.
When Manitoba's justice minister, Matt Wiebe, announced the program it originally had a cap of $500,000. That limit was reached within days of launching the program, and the province then announced a total of $2 million for the program. That new total was reached last week.
Wiebe told the Canadian Press there is a possibility that the program will be relaunched after the government takes time to evaluate it.
"It seems like every single day I'm hearing another story in the media about law enforcement using the … footage that people have collected to have an impact on public safety," Wiebe said Tuesday.
"We also have our own internal data, of course, that we're going to be going through and evaluating."
