On Aug. 29, 2024, Grande Prairie RCMP received a complaint of a break in enter in progress into a Hangar located on Range Road 63 near Grande Prairie. Upon arrival, a suspect saw police and attempted to steal a snowmobile, when not successful, he attempted to run but was quickly arrested. As police were arresting the male, the hangar burst into flames which ignited several volatile accelerants inside that caused significant damage. The fire was held under control and eventually put out by local Fire Dept.
As a result of the investigation RCMP have charged Grande Prairie resident Daryl David Claeys (55) with:
- Resist arrest;
- Possession of break in tools;
- Break and enter;
- Arson
Claeys was taken before a justice of the peace and remanded into custody with his next court date set for Sept. 4, 2024, at the Alberta Court of Justice in Grande Prairie.
Damages to the building and items inside are estimated to be in the millions.
