It's been a rough start to the season for the Strathmore Spartans.
The football team's preseason against the Catholic Central Cougars finished in a 35-0 loss, while their first regular season game ended in a devastating 74-16 blowout against the Cardston Cougars in late August.
The team's next game is set at the Strathmore High School football field on Friday (Sept. 6) at 5 p.m. against the Chestermere Lakers.
"We spent a lot of time over the weekend breaking down Chestermere's film to stop their offense and score points against their defense, says head coach Danny Warrack. "We've done a ton of work with coaches to get these guys more prepared and potentially win this game."
Like the Spartans, the Lakers have yet to win a game this season, losing 28-3 in their first game of the regular season against the Cochrane Cobras.
"Emotions could be running high a little bit as both teams try to get their first team of the year," added Warrack. "It should be a fun one. I'm expecting a good battle and a good first game."
The Spartans and Lakers have faced each other twice in the last three years, with the Spartans winning by a single point back in 2021.
"This is a big game and I'm expecting a great effort. I expect us to compete and win in this game. We need it in this program season to get things turned around here, and I think we're on the right track. I believe in this group and that they can turn things around, and we're going to," mentions Warrack.
The game is free to attend and is open to all ages.
