Hunters in Saskatchewan since 2022 have been required to get permission to hunt on farmers' lands.
According to the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipality's Acting President, Bill Huber, this legislation was a much-needed change.
"It's unfortunate that you get just one or two people out of hundreds and some damage occurs on property, that's unnecessary and it spoils it for everyone, so SARM supported the legislations and the Trespass Act, and we supported it," he commented.
Huber, who is also a farmer, said every fall, knowing of hunters on the land is helpful for the farmers and for the hunters.
"It's good to know who's there, where they want to go," he said. "That way, we can make them aware of any hazards that they might come upon, like a ditch or something that they might drive through, or a fence somewhere, or a dugout or something like that. So it's always good to know who's there and who wants to be there."
Huber added SARM is looking to get an online option for hunters to make it easier to ask farmers for permission.
