Grande Prairie Enforcement Services is working to reduce the nuisance of noise from the use of engine retarder brakes, or Jake Brakes, within city limits. The sound can be very loud, distinctive, and irritating to people nearby.

Peace Officer Sergeant Ryan Hoffman says his team has stepped up enforcement on noise-related violations this year to improve the quality of life for residents and will continue by identifying and dealing with truck drivers using engine brakes.

The use of engine retarder brakes is prohibited in the City of Grande Prairie under section 17 of the Noise, Nuisance and Disturbances Bylaw and comes with a fine of $250.
