Hummingbird moths are making quite an impression in southeastern Manitoba, thanks to their remarkable resemblance to hummingbirds. Norm Gregoire, who leads educational hikes in the Tall Grass Prairie Natural Area, has been sharing his fascination with these unusual insects.
“The first time that you see a Hummingbird moth, you usually don't forget it because they are a really unique looking species,” Gregoire says. Although Gregoire says he's not a moth expert, he points out that there are several types of hummingbird moths in the area, with the Clearwing Hummingbird moth being the most common.
These moths are both eye-catching and interesting to watch. Their wings beat so fast—around 100 times per minute or more—that they hover in front of flowers like real hummingbirds. This unique trait makes them a favorite for people who enjoy nature, whether they’re just curious or serious nature fans.
According to Gregoire, hummingbird moths are crucial pollinators, contributing to the health of local ecosystems. “They're just one of our amazing pollinators that we have in the area,” he explains.
Around his own yard, Gregoire has noticed that these moths are particularly drawn to hanging flower baskets and non-native plants such as petunias. “Of course they would visit native flowers, but I find they're really obsessed with non-native, let's say petunia baskets and things like that,” he adds.
The presence of hummingbird moths has been a pleasant surprise for many residents, who often spot them around their homes and gardens.
“I do get comments about them.”
Their unique appearance and behavior spark curiosity and delight, making them a popular topic of conversation among local gardeners and nature lovers.
