A Strathmore business is hoping that residents will come down and pet some loveable cats this weekend.

The Happy Cat Sanctuary of Alberta is gearing up for its new adoption centre grand opening.

The event will take place this Saturday (Sept. 21) from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Co-founder of the sanctuary Michelle Shave says the program is open to anyone who wants to stop by and hang out with some furry friends.

"We'll have a couple of cats out. It might be a little overwhelming if a lot of people come in all at once, but there's going to be refreshments, we're also going to have a pet photographer on site."

There will also be a ribbon-cutting ceremony to kick off the festivities.

"We've got the mayor and some council members coming out for the event," said Shave.

Shave added that the new adoption centre building will be bigger than the last one.

"It's way bigger than our last adoption centre, so hopefully we can get some more cats into loving homes around the community."

The Happy Cat Sanctuary of Alberta has been in operation for 24 years.
