Swift Current's Great Plains Colege recently received a $100,000 donation to establish a new bursary in honour and memory of long-time southwest resident, Philip Gobeil.

The Philip Gobeil Memorial Bursary is set to provide five $2,000 bursaries to selected students each year for the next decade.

Brad Mahon, president and CEO at Great Plains College in Swift Current, was delighted that the college would be able to help provide students with the means and support to get an education.

"When students and future students think about education and training, cost matters," he said. "For some students, the cost creates a barrier, with this generosity it removes those barriers and provides pathways to the classroom."

Preference for the Philip Gobeil Memorial Bursary will go to trades students in financial need including those taking welding, the electrician program, and power engineering.

"In talking with Mr. Gobeil's family we learned about his life, we learned that when he looked back on his life he recognized that his education had stopped at the grade eight level," shared Mahon. "He talked about how he would've engaged in some education and saw what that could have done to enhance his life further,

"That was something he wanted to make that the next generation had that opportunity, and we really appreciate him thinking of those future students that he doesn't know."

Bursary applications close on September 30 and the selected recipients will receive their bursaries on October 30 at the Scholarship Reception.
