September 23 to 30, 2024, is Rail Safety Week in Saskatchewan The initiative joins a national effort to raise awareness about the importance of safety around trains. With the province's extensive rail system playing a crucial role in Saskatchewan's export-driven economy, officials are reminding the public to prioritize safety near rail lines.

"Saskatchewan Rail Safety Week serves as a great reminder of how much we rely on our rail system and the significant benefits it brings to our export-based economy," said Highways Minister Lori Carr. "It’s also an important time to remind motorists about key rail safety tips, such as looking and listening for trains, understanding railway signage and markings, and staying vigilant at all rail crossings."

Rail safety is a shared responsibility, and maintaining awareness is critical in preventing accidents. In 2023, the Transportation Safety Board of Canada reported 914 rail-related accidents, including 67 fatalities.

As part of its commitment to rail safety, the Ministry of Highways partners with Canadian Safety Train Express Inc. to provide railway safety activity books to Grade 4 students in communities served by short lines, helping educate the next generation about rail safety.

"It’s important for everyone, especially our youth, to understand the significance of railway safety," said Perry Pellerin, CEO of Canadian Safety Train Express. "Railway safety is everyone’s responsibility. We encourage everyone to act as rail safety ambassadors to ensure everyone can go home safely every day."

Saskatchewan’s short-line railways, which span more than 2,000 km and carry essential goods like grain, oil, and lumber, are supported by the Ministry of Highways through the Short Line Railway Improvement Program. This program helps maintain and upgrade tracks to ensure safe rail operations.

Motorists with questions or concerns regarding railway safety, signage, or work zones can contact the Highway Customer Service Centre at 1-844-SK-HIWAY, Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., or access services online at any time.
