St. Peter's College Awards recipients gathered with family and friends to celebrate on September 21.

On Saturday, September 21, St. Peter’s College celebrated its annual Awards Day with students, staff and special invited guests. The morning event, held in St. Peter’s College’s ornately decorated gym, saw recipients, donors, parents, faculty and some notable speakers gather for the ceremony and a wonderful catered lunch following.

The day opened with Father Lawrence DeMong offering a welcome and a tribute to Abbot Peter Novecosky, long-time Abbey member and spiritual leader, who sadly passed away this summer. Brother Basil Schaan offered a prayer.

Dr. Jim Dosman took to the stage, congratulating the recipients on their hard work and diligence. Dr. Dosman, originally from Annaheim and a St. Peter’s College alum, is a well-known figure who has helmed health and safety programs for Saskatchewan farmers and authored 310 scientific publications and 5 books. An Officer of the Order of Canada with many awards, Dr. Dosman continues his affiliation with the College as its board chair.

Dr. Dosman introduced one of Canada’s newly appointed senators, Muenster’s own Tracy Muggli. Muggli attended St. Peter’s College before embarking on a career in social work and health care administration and advocacy. She will step into to her new role as senator following her years at St. Paul’s Hospital as its director.

Muggli spoke about St. Peter’s College fondly as a formative experience. She also spoke passionately about what she had seen as a fledgling social worker in her first post at Wynyard. It was there she responded to a life-changing incident in response to neglected children. The depth of need and the intervention at the most critical moment of children’s lives began to steer her down a political road of advocacy and support for social supports and health care. She challenged students to find that moment that would irrevocably change their views and follow their passions to make a difference.

Many awards to entering students at St. Peter’s College are based on academic acumen and volunteer duties from their high school years. Other criteria included field of study, geographical considerations and financial need.
