Five local business leaders braved the elements as they were airlifted to a remote location west of Calgary to help raise funds for STARS.

Participants were able to generate an incredible $450,000.

According to a new release, the Rescue in the Rockies event showcased five people in different sectors who looked to raise $50,000 each to be "rescued" and get a flight home.

Each participant competed in challenges to simulate a STARS mission and spent that time calling friends, family, and neighbours to help reach their fundraising goal.

Staff with STARS say there were challenges like seeing who could suit up and get buckled in the fastest, and a simulated cardiac arrest medical scenario, which gave each person an inside look into the complexities of a STARS mission.

“We are exceptionally grateful to each of these intrepid leaders that rose to the challenge and absolutely shattered their fundraising goals to raise over $450,000 in support of STARS,” said Katherine Emberly, president and CEO, of STARS. “Their unwavering support, tenacity, and determination is a direct reflection of the Alberta community that has continuously rallied behind our mission for the last 40 years, and enabled STARS to continue delivering critical care, anywhere it is needed.”

Each person was paired with a STARS air medical crew member who supported them throughout the day.

“The vision of CDN’s community investment program is simple: We show up,” said Jamie Saunder, SVP operations, CDN Controls.  “The work of STARS and the incredible people who work to deliver their life-saving mandate deserve the unwavering support of our community and our industry. I am elated to be part of the 2024 Rescue in the Rockies and to help raise funds for such a worthy cause."

STARS isn't just based in Calgary; they also fly missions outside of the city to help save lives.

In an interview with StrathmoreNow, Vanessa Mickel, community engagement coordinator with STARS says the organization flies an average of 23 missions a year in Strathmore.

Donations are still being collected for the fundraiser.
