As the days grow shorter and cooler, many people might think of reading as a cozy fall or winter activity. However, for Louise Balcaen from La Broquerie, reading is a year-round passion.

“It’s entertaining and something to do while curled up in your chair,” she explains.

Nothing beats having a real book in her hands, even though she appreciates different media like eBooks and audiobooks.

Balcaen recently read It Ends With Us and was pleasantly surprised when the movie adaptation matched her imagination.

“(In an interview), the writer said they did such a good job, the actors, and the way they portrayed her book was well done,” she shares. Her local library supports this connection by often showing movies that are based on books.

For those who have never joined a book club, Balcaen offers some insights. Initially, she was hesitant about joining one. “I thought, ‘I don’t want to be forced to read something I’m not interested in,’” she admits. However, after her niece encouraged her to join a book club, she decided to give it a try. Five years later, Balcaen is glad she did.

In their book club, members have the freedom to choose what to read. They usually select titles for six to eight months, taking a break during the summer.

“Some of the books, I wouldn’t have picked myself, but it’s great to explore different genres,” she says. From courtroom dramas to historical fiction, the variety keeps things interesting, Balcaen adds.

Even if a book is challenging, the discussions that follow help everyone gain new perspectives.

Balcaen enjoys the lively discussions that often take place in their group.

“We had to move to a different room because our discussions got too lively!” she laughs. The group consists of about eight people, and it’s not limited to women; everyone is welcome.

Reading, for Balcaen, is not just about education; it’s about entertainment and connection. She encourages everyone to consider joining a book club.

“It gives you something else to talk about with your spouse,” she notes, adding that her husband shares her love for reading, even if their tastes differ.

Balcaen has a heartfelt message for younger readers: “I wish they would put down their iPads and iPhones and pick up a book. Reading sparks imagination in a way that screens cannot.”

As the new book club season kicks off, she hopes more people will dive into reading, whether alone or in a group.
