A mother from Ashville, North Carolina is glorifying God after her seven-year-old son and parents were swept away in floodwaters caused by Hurricane Helene.
Floodwaters in the city rose quickly, forcing Meghan Dyre, her parents and her son, Micah, to the roof of their home.
"Everything was covered in water. I thought we were at our safe point. I thought we were okay still," said Meghan Dyre in an interview with Fox Weather. "In that moment, all I could think about was being a mom, keeping my son safe and reassuring him that this is how superheroes are made. We survive and we keep going. I wanted to keep that alive, so I never let the faith falter."
Unfortunately, due to the force of the water, their home collapsed, and they were swept away, with Micah being ripped from the arms of his mother.
"I'm so proud of my son because, in his last moments, he wasn't screaming for me. He was screaming 'Jesus, Jesus save me. Jesus, I hear you. Jesus, I'm calling upon you.'
"His wildest dream and everything he wanted to be, was a superhero. That was his goal in life. Instead, he's my superhero," said Meghan. "He reached for something past flesh, past human, past anything that even, I think, grown adults would reach for. My son called out to the one God Almighty. I think at that moment he was rescued, and he became my hero."
Dyre continued downstream getting eventually getting caught by roots and trees.
"In the midst of the chaos, all I heard was God telling me to be still and stop fighting the water. That was him, but that was prayers that told me to be still and let the water carry me to where I needed to be rescued."
Meghan, who was in the floodwaters for five hours, ended up between two carriers that stuck with her until a man spotted her and a rescue team pulled her from the water.
Her son was located less than a kilometre from where she was rescued. Her parents were also carried away and did not survive.
"They are rejoicing at the fact that I can tell them what God did for me because it was God. He said 'Be still. I'm in control and you will pass on,'" said Meghan. "This is a backfire for the devil because he tried to take me out, and here I am sharing the word that my son is a hero, and my parents live on in God's glory."
In the aftermath, Meghan says she feels broken, but the prayers she's been receiving have helped her through all of this.
"They are holding me together right now because if it was up to human flesh, I wouldn't be able to do it."
A GoFundMe page has been set up to help her rebuild after this devastating loss.
