The water pumps were out and spraying at the Strathmore Fire Department on Thursday (Oct. 3).

Doug Keeling, a fire captain with the department says members were participating in their annual sign-off for pump training.

"We stress that training is first and forefront right after call response here in our municipality."

Keeling told StrathmoreNow in past years they've had the water supply come out of a hydrant.

"Every year every qualified pump operator within our department has to perform a certain set of skills in a certain scenario to be signed off for their annual evaluation," mentioned Keeling.

This year's evaluation was done in October.

Keeling says during the water restrictions this summer the department couldn't train on any of its pumping practices.

"A lot of us are trying to check that box in October when usually we're doing it in July or August."

According to Keeling, he enjoys doing the evaluations during the cooler weather compared to the extremely hot months.

"It's just a lot nicer to work in these cooler temperatures."

There are just over 40 people that make up the department including full-time and paid-on-call staff.
