Rob Carnie: It's Take 5 with Carney and Carmichael featuring Maurice Carmichael, Moose Jaw’s City Manager.
We have this conversation monthly and some topical things to talk about today certainly.
First of all, the municipal election is just around the corner, coming up November the 13th Polls, advanced polls, let's talk about them first. When will they open?
Maryse Carmichael: So, we have advanced poles that will be available for our residents to go to, to for people that that would like to on October 29th, October 30th, November 2nd, November 4th, 5th and 7th . There could be also mail in ballots. All details are on moosejaw.ca.
Rob: Mail in ballots, when will they be available and what do I have to do to get one?
Maryse: For the mail in ballots please contact our city clerk’s office. The e-mail address is on moosejaw.ca for this. You have until the 29th of October to request mail-in ballots, so October 29th is the deadline.
Rob: Okay, very good. Now the advanced polls that will open up in various locations, can you tell us where?
Maryse: Advanced polls will be at only one location. It's going to be at the Golden Nugget Centre.
Rob: Okay, Election Day. How many polling stations will we have?
Maryse: We have four polling stations in total throughout the city. There'll be one at (The Golden Nugget Centre), Cosmo Senior Citizen Center, Minto United Church and then Church of Our Lady on South Hill. So, all four locations will be open that day for the election between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m.
Rob: Okay, now when the polls close at 8 p.m., paint the picture for us, I'm assuming we'll be welcome to watch and join in on the action in City Council chambers.
Maryse: Yes, it will be very exciting for me, (this is) the first time that I'll be live at City Hall for election night.
The Council chambers will be open for the public. We should have a lot of the candidates there, certainly the candidates for mayor will be on location. We will have live streaming of the results, probably around with polls closing at 8, it should be fairly quick now with the new electronic counting.
So anytime between 8 and 9-9:30 p.m. we should have the results.
Rob: I know from previous experience that it happens, and this is after we invested the money in into the electronic system, the results come in hot and heavy and very quickly at Moose Jaw City Hall. How else will the City of Moose Jaw deliver those results?
Maryse: We will also have media, (they’ll) be at City Hall to ensure that they can catch the reactions of the of the people that are elected. We will deliver the results as well, online on moosejaw.ca, you'll be able to find the information.
Rob: We should mention that all of the bios for our City Council candidates and mayoral candidates are on moosejaw.ca.
All you have to do is go to moosejaw.ca, click on city government right there, and if you scroll down, you will find 2024 election.
You click on 2024 election, and you’ve got all the details right there, what to expect at a polling station, mail in ballot information, online voter registration forms, the fact (that) we have free transit on Election Day and then candidate information and who is running if you click on who is running, that's where you will get the bios for all the Council candidates and the mayoral candidates as well.
Do we have anything else to add about the municipal election coming up?
Maryse: Lots of elections these days. I think we've covered most of the information for the municipal ones, but of course there's the provincial ones happening on October 28th.
Rob: Yes, absolutely.
