Beechy teacher Becky Dubasov is embracing her new role as the Athletic Commissioner for the Sun West School Division. In this position, she will oversee a variety of sports initiatives, taking on responsibilities previously managed by the volunteer executive of the West Central District Athletic Association, which includes all Sun West schools.
"The role of the Athletic Commissioner is to coordinate and administer the wide range of sports and sports programs in the division," Dubasov explained. "There are so many people doing incredible work with our student-athletes, and I hope to make it easier for them to focus on helping students benefit from the amazing sports programs we offer."
As Athletic Commissioner, Dubasov’s duties include managing awards and service recognition, updating and revising handbooks and resources for the West Central District, applying for grants, and compiling activity reports.
Blain Hilbig, Sun West’s Superintendent of Operations responsible for school athletics, spoke highly of Dubasov's appointment. “The Athletic Commissioner is an important role, and Sun West is very lucky to have someone as dedicated and skilled as Becky. She will make a significant impact on students and coaches throughout the division.”
Sports have always been a major part of Dubasov’s life. A multi-sport athlete in high school, she went on to play hockey with the University of Saskatchewan Huskies. During her time at university, she also began coaching hockey, volleyball, and track and field, sparking a passion for coaching that led her into teaching. Over the years, Dubasov has coached golf, volleyball, badminton, and track and field across various age groups.
"Sports offer so much to young people," Dubasov said. "Students learn discipline, teamwork, communication skills, and how to advocate for themselves, and they gain a sense of pride in their families, schools, and communities. I'm thrilled to contribute to that across the division."
With her extensive background in athletics and her enthusiasm for fostering student growth through sports, Dubasov is ready to take on the new role and support Sun West’s vibrant sports programs.
