Welcome to another Made in Manitoba, and tonight... just like your Thanksgiving dinner plate this weekend... we're giving you a second helping of the best music made by Manitobans. We're featuring, for the first time, the Juno-award winning string quartet The Fretless which just released their sixth album "Glasswing". Similar to their previous work, it showcases masterful fiddle and folk melodies combined with genre-bending sounds.
The Fretless are from out of province, but Winnipeg's Madeleine Roger is featured prominently on the album, co-writing and appearing as a vocalist on three of the songs. She's also providing the vocals on the group's current tour which has a stop in Winnipeg October 14th at the West End Cultural Centre. With that connection, we wanted to bring the music of Madeleine and The Fretless to Made in Manitoba this weekend.
Karrnnel Sawitsky, Trent Freeman and Ben Plotnick play the fiddle and viola for The Fretless, and Eric Wright plays the cello. Karnnel, Ben and Madeleine are our guests tonight for Made in Manitoba.
The new album is called "Glasswing"... like the transparent-winged butterfly, and we'll hear how that fragility ties into the sound of The Fretless. We'll also find out how Madeleine Roger became connected to the group... and a hint... it all began with her being a really big fan.
Thank you for joining us as we share a "two for one" Made in Manitoba on Thanksgiving weekend. And by the way, you can see The Fretless and Madeleine Roger in concert October 14th at the West End Cultural Centre in Winnipeg as they stop for a date on "The Glasswing Tour".
