Kerrobert is inviting the community to come out this Friday evening for a special walkthrough of the newly constructed helipad. The gates will be open from 4:30 PM to 7:00 PM, offering residents a chance to see the new donor monument during the football games. Visitors are encouraged to stop by during halftime to take in the monument and support the Kerrobert Rebels football team.
The new helipad, located adjacent to Kerrobert Hospital, represents a crucial addition to emergency services in the area. Designed to improve patient transport and access to emergency medical care, the project has been a significant community-driven initiative, with donations funding the construction.
Kerrobert Fire Chief Brad Murphy shared the story behind the helipad, reflecting on the department’s growing appreciation for STARS Air Ambulance services during busy emergency calls back in 2016-2017. "We really started to appreciate the services that STARS had to offer in terms of emergency assistance in our area and patient care. We figured, why not attach one right to the hospital so patients can just be rolled out the door and directly into the chopper?" said Murphy.
According to Murphy, fundraising for the helipad began in 2017, with generous contributions from local oil companies helping kickstart the project. "We started collecting money and got some generous donations. We also began discussions with the school division about land use, and from there, it rolled on," he explained. "It was a long and sometimes onerous process, navigating through the rules, regulations, and agreements with the Saskatchewan Health Authority. But now, we have a fully operational helipad that benefits the whole area."
Chief Murphy emphasized the importance of community support throughout the entire process, as the project was funded entirely by local donations. "There’s no government money involved. The Volunteer Fire Department runs it, and it doesn’t require extra work from the hospital staff or anyone else. It’s all volunteer time and effort."
Murphy thanked the many donors who made the helipad possible and mentioned that donations are still being accepted for future needs. "There’s an account set up for this, and it’s 100% locally funded. We’re always open to more donations to keep this crucial service running."
The walkthrough event is an opportunity for the community to see firsthand how their contributions have made a difference. As Kerrobert celebrates the new helipad, the town is also sending well wishes for a Happy Thanksgiving and cheering on the Rebels in their football match.
Come out, celebrate, and support your community!
