Strathmore's old RCMP station still stands to this day.

The building, which was used by the RCMP between 1961 and 1995, is located on Glendale Street. The old station is visible while driving on Highway 1.

Back then it was used by the True North Society before being taken over by Step One Housing, which provides affordable housing for those with mental illnesses.

"We work closely with landlords in Strathmore, and we've been in the building for about 18 years, give or take," said John Bland, board chair with Step One.

According to Bland, the only remnant of the RCMP that remains at the old station is the bomb shelter in the basement.

"It was built in about 1960, and during the 60s federal government buildings had bomb shelters in case of a nuclear attack. They were equipped with food and blankets, enough to sustain a few people for a short amount of time," added Bland.

The facility now serves as a home for up to six residents, and the organization is now operating as a local non-profit.

"We're here to help people in need," said Bland. "I believe we've helped a lot of people since Step One Housing has existed."

The RCMP changed locations in the 90s as they grew out of the building, with the new RCMP station being built specifically for police operations.
