Well over 1000 athletes, coaches, parents and volunteers gathered in the hills north of Dixon for this year’s SHSAA Cross Country Provincial Meet hosted by the Carlton Trail Ski Club.
It certainly isn’t the first time the trails have seen action as a cross-country venue, but its central location, challenging features, and volunteer support have made it one of the premier running courses for high school events.
“We have 75 volunteers running this meet today, and we just can’t do it without them,” said Brian Grest, one of the chief architects of the event hosted by the Horizon Central District Athletic Association. “And being that it’s Thanksgiving weekend, we’re really extra appreciative of those people who were able to step forward to make sure this is a fantastic event. I pretty much guarantee that everybody here is going to go home and say it was fantastic to come out to Dixon.”
The weather was cool, and a scattering of cloud cover opened up to sun later in the day providing excellent conditions. The manicured and well-marked trail resulted in some impressive finishes for the athletes on the day.
