The Strathmore Legion was filled with volunteers on Tuesday (Oct. 15) in preparation for the upcoming Poppy Campaign.

The initiative delivers poppy pins and wreaths for local schools and businesses in the area.

"That includes Strathmore, Langdon, Chestermere, Carseland, Indus, and Siksika Nation," said Jenny Schumann, former president of the Legion. "A lot of businesses want to show their support with a poppy tray."

According to Schumann, the number of poppies in each box varies depending on the foot traffic a business or school receives.

"This is the biggest campaign and fundraiser for veterans," said Schumann.

Schumann said she was delighted to see so many volunteers make it out to the Legion to help pack the poppy boxes.

"It's great to see we have so many new members who have joined up, and it's awesome to see them come out and help us with this," added Schumann. "This is the most important event for the Royal Canadian Legion."

For businesses that don't have a poppy box or wreath and want one, Schumann said they only need to contact the Strathmore Legion for delivery.

The poppy was adopted as the official symbol of remembrance in Canada in 1921 and are typically worn from the last Friday of October until Remembrance Day on November 11.

Poppies will become available at local schools and businesses starting on October 25.
