The City of Grande Prairie’s annual fall and winter tree pruning program is now underway through the remainder of October until April of 2025.
City crews conduct elm pruning between October 1 and March 31 each year, aligning with the provincial elm pruning ban that extends from April 1 to September 30.
Pruning during this period is vital to reduce the risk of Dutch elm disease, a deadly fungal infection spread by elm bark beetles. By removing dead or unhealthy branches when the beetles are dormant, the City helps prevent the spread of this disease and preserve the health of our elm population.
This year’s plan includes a comprehensive approach to tree pruning and monitoring across several neighbourhoods, including:
- College Park
- Country Club Estates
- Hilland Park
- Pinnacle Ridge
- Lakeland
- VLA
It's important to note that while these neighbourhoods are part of the plan, the City is committed to addressing tree maintenance needs city-wide. If a tree requires attention outside of the list above, contact AccessGP so it can be addressed.
“By focusing on the health and safety of our community's trees, we can ensure a resilient and vibrant urban forest,” said Director of Environment and Parks, Kase DeVries. “This initiative not only helps protect against pests and diseases but also contributes to the natural beauty that our residents value.”
The City of Grande Prairie appreciates the cooperation of residents as crews work to maintain a safe and beautiful community throughout the pruning season.
