The regular appearances of the Northern Lights have led some enthusiasts to lose sleep as they stay up late to capture the stunning displays.

Steinbach photographer Patrick Friesen took a trip to the Mitchell area on Thursday night to experience the spectacle.

“It was kind of clear overhead. The really neat part was it was almost like it was pulsating. Couldn't quite put a beat to it, but it was a little bit of a light show that was happening right over right overhead. It was cool.”

Friesen is glad he exchanged a couple of hours of sleep for this really neat display of Northern Lights.

“Everybody knew it was going to be big and so you kind of had to go out, at least for a little bit. It opened up around midnight. It opened up for a little while. I needed to work the next day, so I went to bed, but apparently it got even better. About 2:30 between 2:30 and 4:00 in the morning, it was really good.”

Friesen says it’s helpful to have access to Northern Lights forecasts so you know when you’re most likely to see the colours dance across the sky.
