On October 17, the City of Grande Prairie, in partnership with local organizations and educational institutions, hosted Opportunities for All: Tackling Poverty Together event in recognition of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. The event highlighted the importance of collective action in addressing social challenges and emphasized the strength of community collaboration.

A major highlight of the event was the launch of a new bursary program aimed at supporting women in pursuing post-secondary education. Made possible by a generous donor Charles Backman and Backman Family Fund through Northwestern Polytechnic, the new Empowering Women, Transforming Futures Fund will provide financial assistance to women facing socio-economic challenges, offering access to education that can transform lives and unlock new opportunities.

“Poverty is a complex issue that requires the whole community working together,” said City of Grande Prairie Mayor, Jackie Clayton. “It’s not just about income—it’s about access to education, housing, and community social services. By investing in these areas and fostering meaningful partnerships, we can create lasting change and a more equitable future.”
