Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued a special weather statement due to the first accumulating snow of the season.

"Snow will start along the foothills this morning, then push east across southern Alberta through the day," wrote ECCC.

According to the group, some areas may see 5 to 10 centimetres of snow throughout the day, with the flurries ending during the evening on Monday (Oct. 21).

"Rain showers are expected in some areas before precipitation changes over to snow. This may result in slippery surfaces as temperatures fall below zero."

ECCC also asks residents to prepare for deteriorating travel conditions and reduced visibility.

Due to the warm ground, some snow is expected to melt. However, snowfall accumulations will vary depending on the area.

The snow was expected to fall on Monday night but has since been pulled forward to Monday morning.
