A small but dedicated group of community members in Leader has come together to brainstorm ways to support seniors in the area. These individuals, representing healthcare, social services, advocacy, and faith-based organizations, are working to address the various challenges seniors face while living independently. These include issues such as transportation availability, loneliness, the rising cost of living, and the demands of household maintenance.

The group’s mission is not to create a formal organization but rather to ignite a movement of awareness and care for seniors in the community. By fostering dialogue, encouraging new ideas, and promoting greater connection among individuals and organizations, the group aims to help seniors live well in Leader.

Senior Saturday: October 26th

As their first initiative, the group is launching "Senior Saturday" on October 26th, 2024. On this day, they are encouraging residents to connect with seniors in their community through simple acts of service or support. No formal sign-up is required—residents are simply asked to pay attention to the seniors around them and offer help where they can.

Some suggested ways to get involved include:

  • Raking leaves
  • Picking up groceries
  • Visiting a senior for tea or coffee
  • Playing a card game
  • Running errands
  • Cleaning gutters or washing windows

The initiative is designed to get the community to "press pause" and take time to notice the seniors who may need assistance, fostering a sense of connection and care.

Community Involvement and Feedback

The group is also encouraging dialogue and asking for community feedback on how to better support seniors in Leader. Residents are invited to share their thoughts on:

  1. What needs they see seniors facing in the community
  2. Ideas on how the community can better support seniors
  3. Ways they are already caring for seniors through programs or individual efforts

Those interested in getting involved or offering feedback can complete a survey at Jotform link or reach out directly to group members:

  • Shelly Luchenski: 1-306-628-4385
  • John-Mark Bredeson: 1-306-628-8498

The group hopes that Senior Saturday will be the first of many initiatives aimed at building a stronger, more connected community that takes an active role in supporting its senior residents.
