You’ve got one more weekend to take in the full-on spooky experience that is the Festival of Frights at the Humboldt Vintage Club just south of Humboldt. The experience has been running for a couple of weeks, and the response of those who have dared the haunted and cavernous space has been beyond enthusiastic, says Mike Yager with the Festival of Frights.
“We’re very happy with the number of people who have come through the front doors and left screaming out the back,” Yager laughs.
Just like there are those who like their spicy cuisine extra hot, there are those who prefer a milder version. That’s what’s in store for Festival of Frights goers on this Sunday – a special “Behind the Frights” edition.
“There are lots of people around town who have said, ‘I’d really like to know what you’re doing down there, but I just don’t want to be scared.’ So, we decided on Sunday from 2:00 until 4:00 pm, were going to open it up, we’re going to have no actors, we’ll have some of the lights on, and all the decorations will be there.”
That’s means people can wander through the festival layout and have a great opportunity to see the artwork, the design, and some of the effects. The attention to detail on the visuals and sound effects, the projection and the props are on par with a Hollywood horror flick.
“We have an amazing group of people, passionate about Hallowe’en, passionate about scaring, passionate about horror films, and they bring a lot of those ideas into the segments that people will see as they walk through.”
Yager says the actors have been having a great time guiding wayward souls through the labyrinth, but on Sunday, they’ll have a chance to take a back seat to the artistry and the thousands of personnel hours that have gone into the display.
The Festival of Frights has had a positive effect for the Humboldt Lions Club who have taken on the project as a whole for the first time this year. Yager says it’s been a bit stressful shepherding as many actors and volunteers through the development of the event, but the results speak for themselves. It invigorated the group and introduced a lot of new people to the Lions and into the festival fold.
“We have gained a couple Lions members from the Festival, and that’s our goal as a club to become more and more known in the community. We’ve got a lot of young fresh ideas and people, and we are always looking for more.”
There are three more days of the full-on fright experience, Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 7:30 – 11:00 pm. The Scare Free Edition runs from 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm on Sunday,
Select your spice, and do Hallowe’en your way!
