Canadians rely on accurate and timely weather information to make daily decisions and stay safe during extreme weather events. For five years, the WeatherCAN mobile app has been a trusted source, delivering meteorological updates straight from Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC).

Today, ECCC announced the launch of an updated version of the WeatherCAN app, featuring several enhancements designed to improve user experience. The updates, shaped by user feedback, include a new design, easier navigation, and a customizable temperature notification feature.

Key Updates in the New WeatherCAN App:

  • Air Quality Information: Air quality details will now be prominently displayed on each location page, offering quick access to vital safety data during wildfire smoke or pollution events.
  • Temperature Notifications: Users can now set custom notifications for temperature, humidex, or windchill thresholds.
  • Contemporary Look and Accessibility: The app now has a modern visual design, with an option to switch between light and dark mode for better accessibility.
  • Radar Features: Additional improvements to the in-app radar are being developed and will be available next year.

Available for free on Apple and Android devices, WeatherCAN users can update their app through the Apple App Store or Google Play Store. New users can also download the updated version directly.

ECCC encourages users to provide feedback on the app’s new design through its feedback feature or the "Contact Us" form on weather.gc.ca.

"Climate change is impacting the frequency and severity of extreme weather events across Canada. This past summer saw extreme heat, drought, wildfires, heavy rainfall, and flash floods. These app improvements are part of the Government of Canada’s commitment to ensuring Canadians have the necessary information to stay safe.”
Steven Guilbeault, Minister of Environment and Climate Change

“Canadians can better prepare for natural disasters when they are informed. The updated WeatherCAN app will help them stay ahead by providing quick, reliable weather data, enabling safer decisions.”
