The Biggar RCMP had an eventful week, responding to 32 calls for service. Of these, 21 were traffic-related occurrences, including warnings, inspections, and tickets for speeding, seatbelt violations, and uninsured vehicles, as part of RCMP Traffic Services operations.
Several incidents of vandalism and theft were also reported. On October 15, a cut fence was discovered at Lizard Lake Community Pasture, and tools were stolen from a truck in the RM of Eagle Creek. Additionally, there was a motor vehicle collision at the train track bridge north of Biggar.
The following day, a red Ford pickup truck with a white slip tank was reported acting suspiciously in the RMs of Perdue and Biggar. This led to a complaint of power tools being stolen from a location north of Kinley. A shoplifting incident was also reported in Biggar, where two suspects fled in a black car. RCMP are reviewing surveillance footage to identify the individuals involved. There was also a theft of a licence plate from a Ford F150.
On October 16, RCMP dealt with a traffic hazard after a roadkill was found in the westbound lane of Highway #14, five miles west of Asquith. A hitchhiker wearing dark clothing was also reported along Highway #14 east of Biggar, but police found no one when they arrived.
October 18 saw the RCMP check on the wellbeing of a man who was found safe. On the same day, a barbed-wire fence was damaged by a vehicle east of Biggar, and a Capix Villain grey BMX bike with orange handles was stolen from a school while the owner's child was attending class. Officers also responded to an unwanted person at a Biggar business, later cautioning the individual to stay away.
On October 19, the RCMP responded to a house fire in the RM of Eagle Creek at 6:40 a.m. All occupants were safely evacuated, and two were treated by EMS at the scene. The Eagle Creek Fire Department extinguished the blaze, but the residence was destroyed. The fire is not believed to be suspicious. RCMP also dealt with a deer-vehicle collision east of Biggar, a civil dispute between neighbours, and a quasi-threatening comment made between a former employee and employer.
Finally, on October 20, officers responded to a report of a person slumped over on a park bench. The individual was found to be in good health. RCMP also dealt with a house party on the 300 block of 3rd Avenue West, where a parked vehicle was vandalized. A school bus on 4th Avenue West was also forcefully entered, causing damage to the hinges and bending one of the doors.
