Certain waffle brands have been recalled due to listeria contamination.

According to the Government of Canada, they are asking residents to not eat, sell, or serve the recalled products.

The waffle brands are Great Value, No Name, Western Family, and Compliments.

The items are distributed by Treehouse Foods.

"Listeria monocytogenesis is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems," says the Canadian government in a news release. "Healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Listeria monocytogenesinfection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women."

There are several tips that residents can implement if they become sick:

  • Contact a healthcare provider.
  • Check to see if they have recalled products.
  • Recalled products should be thrown out or returned to the area they were bought.

Listeria may not look, or smell spoiled, but it can still make people sick.

"Pregnant women, the elderly, and people with weakened immune systems are particularly at risk. Although infected pregnant women may experience only mild, flu-like symptoms, the infection can lead to premature delivery, infection of the newborn, or even stillbirth. In severe cases of illness, people may die," mentioned a release from Treehouse Foods.

Staff with Treehouse said there have been no reported illnesses due to the recalled products so far. The issue was found through routine testing at the manufacturing centre.
