Bridgepark Manor in Steinbach is known not just for its comfortable living arrangements but for the vibrant community it fosters among its senior residents. And volunteers like Jonathon Penner are important in this community.
Penner is a local musician from Landmark and a devoted volunteer who always fills the chapel with people who look forward to hearing his music.
Jacquie Enns, the Activity Director at Bridgepark Manor, shares her thoughts on the significance of these musical gatherings.
“It just raises their spirits. It brings them joy,” she says with a smile. “It’s just extra special to have somebody coming out in the evening that would take of their own time as a volunteer. In fact, he doesn’t want payment. He just wants to come and bless the residents.”
Enns says this sentiment resonates deeply, as residents feel genuine care from this special volunteer.
“They can feel that he loves them,” Enns adds, noting that Penner often shares little anecdotes during his performances that further connect him to the audience.
The turnout for Tuesday evening’s concert was impressive, with the chapel full of residents, their families and friends.
“They do have their favorites. He’s my favorite,” Enns says. “They ask for him over and over again. It’s really sweet.”
Penner, a Landmark native, began his musical journey at an early age, largely influenced by his sister’s piano lessons.
“I wanted to take guitar, but we had bought a piano. We couldn’t afford another instrument,” he explains. “So, I guess it was piano lessons.” He continued playing through high school, eventually completing his Grade 8 exam with the Western Conservatory of Music. “But I just started playing more in bands,” he recalls, pivoting toward a more contemporary style.
Penner understands the profound impact music can have on an audience, especially in settings like Bridgepark Manor.
“I mean, I don’t know if it’s the power of music or the Holy Spirit,” he reflects. “It feels like you can connect so well with music in a way that you can’t in many other ways.”
The evening wasn’t just about the music; it was also a reunion of sorts.
“There are some people here that I know,” Penner notes prior to performing on Tuesday, pointing out familiar faces among the audience, including relatives and former teachers. “It’s definitely encouraging and it’s awesome to see.”
For Penner, the goal of his performance transcends entertainment.
“I want to do my best and play, and my purpose isn’t just to put on a show. I want people to be blessed through the music and that God speaks to them through it somehow.”
To young musicians who might feel discouraged while learning their craft, Penner offers some heartfelt advice. “I went through all that. It is frustrating,” he admits, reminiscing about the challenges of practice. “But keep it up. Play something you love. If you don’t like the song, ask your teacher for a different one. Just keep going, even if it’s tough.”
