Viola Friesen (nee Fuchs), was born December 24, 1934, and passed away in the early morning hours on Thursday, October 31, 2024, at Emerson Personal Care Home.
Mom is survived by her children: Edward (Brenda), Jeanette (JP), Bernice (Denis), Dennis (Lisa) grandchildren: Brandi, (Pat), Todd (Kaylee), Andrea (TJ), Vanessa (Alex), Brenna, Shane (Brittany), Kadin and Tanaye. Great-grandchildren: Dominique, Dakota, Annabelle, Chayse, Kinsley, Scarlett, Blake, Arlee, Colton, Gunnar and Cynthia. She is also survived by one sister-in-law Evelyn Fuchs. She was predeceased by her husband Dick, her parents and numerous other family members.

Mom used to say that if she would be the last family member to survive, she would turn off the lights. Mom was born in Lowe Farm where she attended elementary school and she often talked about going to school with horse and buggy. The family moved to Grunthal during her teenage years where she attended Lister West school. Mom and dad were married on November 15, 1952, and were together for almost 50 years before dads passing. They lived in Grunthal for their first years of marriage before buying a farm later on. Years on the dairy farm involved lots of hard labour, and mom would milk the cows and even help with hauling bales. She always enjoyed having a garden and doing lots of canning. A tradition which has passed on to her daughters too.

Mom and dad sold the dairy farm in 1975, and moved to Steinbach. Dad went to work at Loewen Windows and mom was able to have her dream job of working in a sewing factory. She loved sewing, knitting, crocheting and doing numerous other crafts. All of which she was very talented at doing. Mom was an excellent baker, there were always cakes, cookies and pies at her house.

Mom and dad spent their retirement years going camping and their favourite place was Thief River Falls. After dads passing in 2002, mom was still able to enjoy camping at a seasonal site in St. Malo for several years. Mom lived on Beaver Crescent in Steinbach, for 41 years, and in the fall of 2016 she moved to Bridge Park manor, where she enjoyed apartment living for two years. Then the dementia progressed and she was no longer able to stay alone and moved to the Emerson Personal Care Home, where she spent her last six years.
We look back now and see the dementia had started many years before we even realized what was she was going thru. The changes were gradual at first, then later loosing her speech and finally her mobility. Mom was a two time breast cancer survivor, and then lost her life to dementia. The dementia journey is a long and painful journey for the families to witness, but mom is finally at peace. Thank you to all the great caregivers at the Emerson Personal Care Home, and special thanks to Derek Robert Hucaluk and Lisa McIntyre, who were by her side at the end. If desired, donations may be made in Viola’s memory to the Emerson Personal Care Home , Box 428, Emerson, MB R0A 0L0.
