The following are the responses from Perry Haug to questions that Discover Moose Jaw posed to all city council candidates:

Q: Why are you running for council?

A: I am running for council because I believe it’s time for a change in our city. Moose Jaw is not just a place; it’s my home, and I have deep roots here through my family and lifelong friendships. Like many of the other candidates, I want the best for all citizens of Moose Jaw. With fresh perspectives and innovative ideas, I am eager to be a part of the council that represents your voice and works for the betterment of our community.

Q: Do you have experience in public service/community board/politics?

A: I have experience in both business and community service that has shaped my understanding of public needs. As a former owner of revenue property and a business related to the public, I am familiar with the importance of community engagement. I have also participated in union meetings and understand the relevant policies and procedures. While my direct political experience is limited, I bring over 14 years of experience as a boilermaker welder. Additionally, I have dedicated over 20 years to serving the Moose Jaw community through children's and couples' ministries at Victory Church. This background has given me valuable insights into the needs and concerns of our residents.

Q: Do you think experience matters one way or another?

A: Experience does matter, but it’s essential to consider what kind of experience counts. While I may have limited formal experience in politics, I have a wealth of lived experience to draw from. I understand firsthand how the decisions made by the council impact our community—whether those decisions have been beneficial or require us to adapt and make the best of the situation. Fresh ideas often come from those with different perspectives, including those who may be less experienced. Balancing diverse experiences can lead to the best outcomes for our community.

Q: What topic/policy issue/incident was the tipping point for you?

A: The issue of business tax has been a significant tipping point for me, as it directly affects our ability to attract and retain businesses in Moose Jaw. High business taxes can stifle local economic growth and deter potential investors from relocating to our city. It's essential that we create an environment that encourages investment and fosters entrepreneurship.

Additionally, the lack of affordable housing is a critical concern. I believe we need to collaborate with private developers and nonprofit organizations to leverage resources and create more affordable housing projects. This partnership can help ensure that everyone in our community has access to safe and affordable living options. Addressing these interconnected issues is vital for the long-term prosperity and sustainability of Moose Jaw.

Q: What criticism do you have, if any, for the politics you’ve seen over the last two or three years?

A: In the past two to three years, many citizens of Moose Jaw have expressed feeling that they lack a voice in the policies being passed. There have been limited opportunities for public attendance and engagement. I believe the council needs to prioritize transparency and accountability by improving communication with the residents of Moose Jaw. It's essential that our community feels heard and involved in the decision-making process.

Q: What is your plan to compromise/cooperate with fellow council/members to accomplish policy goals?

A: My plan to compromise and cooperate with fellow council members begins with actively listening to the citizens of Moose Jaw. Together, we can focus on common objectives that align with community needs, fostering unity around a shared vision. I will encourage respectful dialogue and aim to address disagreements constructively, ensuring we maintain a positive and collaborative working environment.

Q: What else do you want voters to know about you?

A: My heart is deeply rooted in Moose Jaw, the place we all call home. While my formal experience in politics may be limited, I am committed to listening to the residents of Moose Jaw and advocating for our city. I will prioritize the needs and voices of our community, and my goal is to work collaboratively with the council to create a vibrant city that offers opportunities for everyone. Together, we can build a brighter future for Moose Jaw.

Q: In the interest of transparency are you co-ordinary or do you share an association with any other candidates in any way what so ever?

A: I know several of the candidates running for council and mayor, having lived in Moose Jaw for many years. We all share deep roots in our community and a passion for making Moose Jaw a better place. While we have connections, none of us are collaborating for personal gain. We are running alongside each other to advocate for positive changes in policies and procedures, prioritizing the voices of the public for the benefit of future generations.
