The Steinbach Huskies and Ste. Anne Aces were winners in the Hanover Tache Junior Hockey League Sunday night. Cody Neufeld scored twice as Steinbach defeated Grunthal 3-1. Samuel Bergen had the other Huskies goal on a penalty shot 50 seconds after Neufeld scored the go-ahead goal early in the middle period. Carter Braun had the lone goal for the Red Wings. The Grunthal captain beat Steinbach netminder Connor Stewart just 11 seconds into the game. The Aces snapped their two-game losing skid. Ste. Anne downed the Gators 8-3 at the East St. Paul Community Centre.


The Eastman Selects dropped a 3-2 decision to the Winnipeg Thrashers at the SunGro Centre in Beausejour. Kasen Mateychuk and Josh Borgfjord did the goal scoring for the Selects who trailed 1-0 and 2-1 at the period breaks. Crosby Harrison scored the go-ahead goal for the Thrashers with 2:21 left in regulation. 


Team Manitoba lost its preliminary round opener 4-3 to British Columbia at the 2024 U18 Women's National Hockey Championship in Quispamsis, New Brunswick. Linnea Misner of Cooks Creek, Jessica Anderson of Roland and Rio Pierre of Winnipeg scored for Manitoba. Elyse Denbow of Plumas made 33 saves. Team Manitoba's next game is today (11 a.m.) against Quebec. 


The Winkler Royals and Portage Islanders were winners in the South Eastern Manitoba Hockey League Sunday night. Aaron Lewadniuk scored twice and Matthew Thiessen made 51 saves as Winkler downed Carman 3-1. Mitch Dyck also scored for the Royals. Mikol Sartor had the lone goal for the Beavers. Jared Roy scored twice and Brock Trotter had a goal and three assists as Portage beat Red River 5-3. Riley Borody and Jayson Brooks had the other Islanders goals. Gavin Froese, Justin Baudry and Jared Magne replied for the Wild. Portage netminder Jacob Gnidziejko stopped 58 shots. 


The Winnipeg Jets scored four third period goals en route to a 7-4 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning at Canada Life Centre. Dylan Samberg scored the go-ahead goal early in the third period. Nikolaj Ehlers and Cole Perfetti added empty net goals. Mark Scheifele, Logan Stanley Vladislav Namestnikov and Alex Iafallo also scored for the Jets who have won 11 of their first 12 games. Connor Hellebuyck made 26 saves.

The Selects are in 7th place with a 6-4-1 record

The Eastman Selects lost home games to the Interlake Lightning and Winnipeg Thrashers this past weekend. Head coach Bruce Sirrell will join Clayton Dreger on the Selects Report which airs Mondays at 5:15 p.m. on AM 1250 Radio.
