Remembrance Day is only a week away, and plenty of schools, organizations, and local legions are preparing for the big day.

Here are several ceremonies that will honour veterans who gave their lives for Canadian freedom:

1. No Stone Left Alone

Rocky View County will host a special ceremony at the Garden of Peace Cemetery near Chestermere on Wednesday (Nov. 6).

The ceremony, which pays tribute to veterans, is expecting between 70 to 100 people to attend, including students from Bishop Carroll in Calgary and St. Gabriel the Archangel School in Chestermere.

According to Todd Baker, lead cemetery operational coordinator with the county, there are around 500 veterans buried in the cemetery.

The event begins at 11 a.m.

2. École Brentwood Elementary School

École Brentwood Elementary School in Strathmore has a ceremony planned for Thursday (Nov. 7).

According to the school, students have been working hard for weeks to prepare for the special event.

Everyone is welcome to attend the ceremony, which begins at 11 a.m.

3. Strathmore Municipal Library

The Strathmore Municipal Library will remember those who served during times of war through a special program on Friday (Nov. 8).

There will be crafts, story time, and the opportunity to make cards for local veterans, who will be attending the event on behalf of the Strathmore Legion. 

The program runs from 1:30 p.m. until 3:30 p.m.

The library will be closed on Remembrance Day.

4. Chestermere High School

Chestermere High School has a ceremony set for Friday (Nov. 8).

It's one of many ceremonies being held by Rocky View Schools during the week.

The event begins at 9:15 a.m. and will wrap up at 10:35 a.m.

5. Royal Canadian Legion Strathmore-Branch #10 

The Strathmore Legion will host a Remembrance Day ceremony on Monday (Nov. 11) in front of the cenotaph.

The legion has been busy with its Poppy Campaign and setting up crosses outside of the legion.

Vice president Dave Haines said that 32 veterans from Strathmore and Wheatland County died serving in World War I.

Several local veterans are also travelling to schools in the area speaking to students about the importance of Remembrance Day and what the poppy signifies. 

6. City of Chestermere

About 20 minutes away from Strathmore, the City of Chestermere will also play host to a Remembrance Day ceremony on (Nov. 11).

The event will take place at the Anniversary Park cenotaph starting at 10:40 a.m.
