The electric vehicle market has been quickly expanding in recent years, leaving interested consumers eagerly waiting for what’s to come.

Right now, Volvo Cars Royal Oak in Calgary is excited to share their expanded electric model selection with the all new EX30 and EX90 models!

As more electric and hybrid vehicle options become available for the average consumer, the Government of Canada’s Zero-Emission Vehicle Incentive is making it easier for Canadians to make the switch, offering a rebate of up to $5,000 applied at time of purchase or lease. This government incentive is available for full-electric vehicles like the Volvo EC40, EX40, and the all new EX30. Interestingly, the rebate also applies to certain plug-in hybrids like the Volvo XC60, and S60 sedan.

General Sales Manager at Volvo Cars Royal Oak, Gene Lapointe, says, “Up until recently, we’ve only had two fully electric vehicles to offer the market. With the addition of the all new EX30 and EX90, we're making these electric vehicles more attainable for the consumer, both in practicality and in price.”

The all-new Volvo EX90 is Volvo’s first full-electric 7-passenger vehicle, allowing those with big families – who need big vehicles – to get into an electric vehicle that can meet their needs.

“We anticipate the arrival of our very first EX90, which will be made available for test drives before the end of this year” says Lapointe. “And we already have the EX30.”

He continues, “The EX30 is a smaller, compact SUV, with up to 420 kilometers of electric range. It’s actually the fastest Volvo ever made, going from 0km/h to 100km/h in just 3.6 seconds with the twin motor model. Plus, we have them for sale right now, with models starting under $60,000+tax. When you do the math, less the $5,000 post-tax rebate that we apply at the dealership at time of purchase, that's a very competitive price point for someone to get into a luxury electric car right now.”

While many people may not know what to look for in an electric car, Volvo has been in the game since 2020. As Lapointe indicates, “We’re not new to this. Our certified technicians are very well versed with the technology, and our sales staff are extremely knowledgeable about the product, as well as its maintenance and overall ownership costs.”

He adds, “At the same time, we understand full-electric vehicles aren’t for everybody. It really depends on your household and what you use your car for, what your commute is like. Which is why we have other powertrain options available, like plug-in hybrids, that we’re not in any way shape or form phasing out.”

Lapointe reminds that all new Volvo models at the Royal Oak dealership start with at least a mild hybrid powertrain, meaning hybrid vehicles that have a small electric motor assisting the gas motor. On the mild hybrids, the electric motor assists the gas engine which gives the driver not only better fuel economy, but more instant power, smoother acceleration, and a more quiet and comfortable driving experience overall.

Lapointe highlights, “The plug-in hybrids are fitting the mold for a lot of households in Canada right now. It offers up to 64-kilometres of pure electric range, but you still have the gas engine to get you on further trips. So, you’re able to commute in the city on full electric, but on long distance trips you don't have to worry about where you're going to charge, you just use your gas. So that’s a really good option for people that aren't quite sure about going full electric right now.”

In addition to the expanded electric range, the new Volvo models are outfitted with the most state-of-the-art safety technology available on the market.

“Volvo is known to be #1 in safety,” said Lapointe. “With this new generation of cars coming out, particularly the EX90, we're seeing the new Safe Space Technology powered by LIDAR.”

LIDAR is an optical device, measuring distance and speed, that can identify road obstructions and hazards up to 200m away while you’re driving.

“It’s incredible technology,” he said. “So, if there’s a tire laying in the road, or an animal in the ditch, LIDAR will see it well before you can yourself and notify you. Even if you’re driving at highway speeds in poor visibility, it’ll be able to pick it up at an astonishing distance.”

Whether you’re ready to take the leap into a new electric vehicle, or just want to learn more about your options, Gene Lapointe and the team at Volvo Cars Royal Oak have the knowledge to help. Get in touch, or check out the vehicle selection online at www.volvocarsroyaloak.com.
