Kindersley Composite School held a moving Remembrance Day ceremony on Thursday, November 7, 2024, to honour the sacrifices made by Canadian soldiers.
The ceremony began with an introduction video produced by the Government of Canada, setting the tone for a respectful tribute. Local legion members including Dale Gilbert and Scott Holloway, along with local air cadet Sgt. Mapes, formed the honour guard.
The KCS band then played "O Canada," followed by students Addison Nugent and Zoe Longmire laying wreaths, symbolizing respect for those who have served.
This year's service was planned and organized by the History 20 class, who presented a special performance titled We Remember: Their Sacrifice, Our Freedom. The service was divided into two acts, with the first focusing on the experiences of soldiers during World War I. The students recreated fictional letters written by soldiers during the war, providing an accurate glimpse into their lives. Teachers Mrs. Froese and Mrs. Ross read from the World War I Honour Roll, while Grade 9 students participated in an Act of Remembrance.
In the second act, the ceremony shifted its focus to World War II. The History 20 class delivered another set of thoughtful readings. Teachers Mrs. Froese and Mrs. Ross read from the World War II Honour Roll, while Grade 9 students took part in another Act of Remembrance during this segment.
The ceremony reached its emotional peak with the Last Post, performed by Leslee Maki, followed by two minutes of silence as students and staff stood in reverent remembrance of those who gave their lives in service to Canada.
Two local high school students shared personal stories about the impact of the wars on their families, reflecting on the lessons they learned from their relatives.
Scott Holloway of the Kindersley Legion Branch 57 delivered a brief but impactful speech on the importance of Remembrance Day, urging attendees to reflect on the freedoms and peace we enjoy today.
The event was attended by students, staff, and locals, all of whom gathered to honour the memory of those who served and sacrificed in Canada's military history.
